Thread weight: what the number means
Thread weight is expressed as a number — 50wt, 40wt, 28wt, etc. Counterintuitively, a higher number means a finer thread (it takes 50 meters of 50wt thread to weigh 1 gram; it takes only 40 meters of 40wt thread). For machine quilting:
- 50wt: Fine, subtle. Blends into the quilt surface. Good choice for quilts where the patchwork design should dominate. Most forgiving with tension. The most commonly recommended weight for machine quilting beginners.
